I have a friend who is an Illustrator and she does paste ups, caricatures, cartooning, etc. She has over 20 years of
experience. Anyone know of any leads for jobs? She is also freelancing. Thanks. |

Freelancing agencies can be a good start. Make sure to have a portfolio and know exactly what you are looking for. You could also approach elance.com
If you have designer friends, contact them. ask them if you can assist them on their work, try to put some real life clients on your portfolio, get references from your designer friends - use those references to get new clients. little things like these can help you put your foot in the door. and most all, learn to stop. don't let your clients step all over you. show them who is in control. but also give them respect. as much as you give yourself respect. Contact the Creative Group Inc. They hire freelancers and send them to the companies who need one.

Get together a clean portfolio - if you're new and have no experience post yourself and your qualifications on Craigslist. The good part is that you will find work, but the bad part is that you won't be paid much for it. The nature of the industry is based on experience and to be quite honest it does count since the more work you do the more you produce quality work. Creative agencies are amazing - such as Aquent or Creative Niche, but you'll have to show some work for them to consider giving you placement.

Personally I have had terrible results using craigslist. The problem is all the people reading or posting on craigslists have no money. I've had two clients refuse to pay a retainer. Another just disappeared on me half way through the project. It can be very frustrating.
I've also used http://www.getafreela... My best clients have been found through word of mouth and maintaining relationships with people. I think your best bet is just to make sure all your work pleases your clients. They will refer you and your web of relationships will build. This is vital. Seth Barrett www.sturbaindesigns.com |

Like I said , the "bad part of this is that you won't get much money from it..."
What you could do is email everyone you know on your email list and tell them that you are looking for work. Stick in a wicked link to your portfolio too ;) |
